Manipur Violence | Women Bear the Brunt of Violence and Ethnic Strife

Manipur

Atrocities against women during the Manipur violence have once again shed light on the fact that whenever there is conflict and violence, women and girls become its victims. From Afghanistan to Ukraine and even in India, women often suffer from the cruelties of war and violent incidents.

Throughout history, women and girls have borne the brunt of violence and conflicts. In any region, when violent incidents occur, women and girls often feel more vulnerable and unsafe. Sexual violence is frequently employed as a weapon during such violent events.

The situation in Manipur has come to light through a viral video that has left humanity appalled. For the past two and a half months, violence has been ongoing between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur. Amidst this violent period, a disturbing video has surfaced, showing two women from the Kuki community being forced to walk naked on the streets. Reports suggest that they were also victims of gang rape. One of the women is around 40 years old, while the other is merely 21 years old. The perpetrators were caught during the violence.

The incident reportedly took place on May 4, 2023, but the video came to light in July. The main accused in this shameful incident, Huirem Herodas Meitei, a 32-year-old resident of Pechi Avang Leakai, has been arrested.

The horrifying events in Manipur bring attention once again to the urgent need for society to prioritize the safety and protection of women, especially during times of conflict and violence. Such incidents should serve as a wake-up call for us all to work collectively toward building a world where women can live without fear, and violence against them becomes a thing of the past. Let us come together to create a safer and more inclusive society where every individual is treated with respect and dignity, regardless of their gender.
